Welding is an art, it is not exceptionally difficult to learn, although it is difficult to master. To learn to weld requires some patience and some money for the basic tools. To get into welding requires the following at a minimum:
*Welding helmet, auto darkening ($45 (Harbor Freight) to over $200 for industrial quality)
*Welding clothes, such as gloves, aprons, coats, hats and jump suits.
*Welder, Mig (Metal Inert Gas), flux core or Gas.
If you are serious and want a good rig, check out National Tools ADT welders $405 130 Amp MIG/FLUX
or Northern Tool welders such as the $499 Hobart Handler 140 .
*Misc. clamps and angle grinder with wire brush to clean off the area to be welded.
These are readily available at Lowes or Home Depot.
As you get into welding you might want to invest in a metal welding table, stick welder, and possibly even a plasma cutter or an Oxygen/Acetylene torch set.
Now, to get into welding. I am not going to spend a lot of time telling you how to weld. Instead, I will provide the following links to help you in your quest to learn welding. Of course the best thing to do is to attend a welding course at your local Community College before sinking hundreds of dollars into equipment that you may not know how to use. There are basically two types of electric welding that the average back yard welder can afford. They are Stick welding and MIG welding. Stick welding is mostly used for special materials such as welding cast iron, stainless steel or hardened steel such as pry bars. Of course, it can also be used on regular steel as well. MIG welding or wire feed welding is more widely used for regular steel welding. MIG welding comes in 2 flavors, inner shield and gas. Inner shield wire has flux inside the wire that provides a shield for the weld. The result is not nearly as good as gas, but is much less expensive, and it will work in all MIG welders. In the training videos they are using a MIG gas welder. You will never get as good looking a weld with inner shield wire.
